Seems like a while since we’ve reviewed a good old fashioned, salt-of-the-earth, arse-kicking synthesiser plugin. Well lets remedy that by taking a look and a listen at and to Discovery Pro from Disco DSP.
A voyage of…
Somehow, Disco DSP hadn’t hit our radar until recently. Which is weird, because they’ve been around a while and have some amazing plugins (including Bliss, a really powerful sampler plugin). Luckily we discovered Discovery Pro. One for the analog emulation lovers, Discovery Pro has 4 layers / 12 oscillators with Sync / FM as well as WAV / SoundFont (SF2) support and PADSynth re-synthesis. It has a bunch of filters and modulation options to tweak until the cows come home. And when they come home they’ll be super impressed with the noises you’re making. So just do it for the cows if nothing else.
This reviewer isn’t familiar with the Nord Lead synth that this is based on but I was able to immediately dive in and start making really satisfying bass and lead sounds. The arpeggiator didn’t take long to get the hang of either and soon enough I was creating phat, lush rhythms.
The full capabilities of this plugin are beyond the scope of this review but it can do plenty. The ability to integrate samples gives it an edge over other synths, even if it’s a bit complicated to add your own (see the manual) there are plenty included to keep you going. There’s also a huge selection of great sounding presets to use as starting points for your own sonic journeys.
In addition to this, Discovery DSP imports and exports Nord Lead 2 SysEx data. So if you actually own one of those beasts (or can otherwise get access to patches) you can share presets between the hardware and the software with much joy and happiness.
Check out the Disco DSP YouTube channel for a bunch of neat tutorials on how to use this beast.
